MAD Architecture Firm led by Ma Yansong announced the design of Harbin Airport Terminal T3. In response to the vast ups and downs of the northern plains of China, the geographical environment of ice and snow, MAD T3 terminal design is like a snowflake falling on the northeastern land, glittering, and echoes closely with the urban characteristics of Harbin "Ice City". At the same time, she is like a surreal interstellar space base, with a strong sense of the future.
As the capital of Heilongjiang Province, Harbin occupies an important strategic position in the core hinterland of Northeast Asia, which radiates Europe and America. Harbin T3 terminal is located in the southwest side of existing T1 and T2 terminal buildings. The overall planning covers an area of about 3300 hectares, with a construction area of about 920,000 square meters, including a series of airport ancillary facilities such as terminal buildings, ground transportation hub, hotels and parking lots.
MAD design avoids the shortcomings of traditional terminal building such as too large scale and inconvenient users, creates a pleasant atmosphere close to human body scale and "temperature", and achieves the goal of green energy saving. T3 with 89 near seats is a snowflake-shaped five-fingered corridor, which greatly shortens the time for passengers to walk to the boarding gate. The design of multi-taxiway in the central harbour effectively improves the utilization rate of the seats.
Many gardens in the terminal building are not only indoor landscape but also a very intimate public space. They are also road signs to guide passengers to different spaces. The glass skylight on the top of the garden brings the natural light outside into the indoor, so that visitors can feel the natural rhythm indoors, and at the same time effectively reduce the use of artificial lighting.
Ground Transportation Center (GTC) brings together high-speed railway, urban subway, airport bus and other urban traffic. People can go straight from the city to the same axis of the terminal and hotel, providing the precondition for people to travel green. The garden-style layout in GTC provides a comfortable and relaxing leisure place for travelers by perfectly combining the landscape with the functions of different formats.
After the completion of T3 terminal, the carrying capacity of passengers and cargo at Harbin Airport will be significantly improved. In 2030, T3 will achieve an annual passenger throughput of 43 million people and an annual passenger aircraft take-off and landing sorties of about 320,000, making Harbin Airport a truly international competitive hub airport.
